Diagnosed with Cancer?
You May Be Eligible For a $100,000 Payment From the US Government.
If you lived in certain states between the 1940s and 1970s and were later diagnosed with cancer, you may be eligible for compensation. The U.S. Government has established a program to pay individuals who developed specific cancer types linked to the nation's radioactive waste.
To qualify, you only need to prove you lived in an affected area for the required time and later developed one of the specified cancers.
Types of RECA Claims
The Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) has been expanded to cover two main categories of claimants affected by the U.S. nuclear program.
"Downwinders" - $100,000
This category is for individuals who lived downwind of atmospheric nuclear weapons tests, primarily from the Nevada Test Site. The 2025 expansion significantly increased the number of eligible locations.
- Key Requirement: Physical presence in an eligible area for at least one continuous year during the specified time periods.
- Covered Illnesses: Leukemia (other than chronic lymphocytic), Multiple Myeloma, Lymphomas (other than Hodgkin's disease), and primary cancers of the Thyroid, Breast, Esophagus, Stomach, Pharynx, Small Intestine, Pancreas, Bile Ducts, Gall Bladder, Salivary Gland, Bladder, Brain, Colon, Ovary, and Liver.
Manhattan Project Waste Exposure - $100,000
A major 2025 expansion includes individuals exposed to radioactive waste from the Manhattan Project, often through contaminated drinking water and other environmental factors.
- Key Requirement: Presence for at least one year between 1942 and 1970 in specific ZIP codes near production and waste sites.
- Covered Locations: Includes communities near St. Louis, MO (Coldwater Creek), Oak Ridge, TN, Paducah, KY, and Amchitka, AK.
- Covered Illnesses: The list of compensable diseases is the same as for "Downwinders."
