Prempro & Premarin Risks & Side Effects

The Women’s Health Initiative Study, which was halted in 2002, found that when compared to a placebo, there was an overall increased risk of the following adverse events when taking hormone replacement therapy:

  • 41% increase in strokes;
  • 29% increase in heart attacks;
  • 100% increase in blood clots;
  • 22% increase in total cardiovascular disease;
  • 26% increase in breast cancer.

The study also found that the use of a combination hormone regimen should not be initiated or continued for primary prevention of coronary heart disease. This confirms that in addition to stimulating the growth of breast cancer, hormone therapy makes breast tumors harder to detect which leads to dangerous delays in diagnosis.
